Theresa Cuba

My name is Theresa Cuba. I graduated from Florida State University with a MLIS and a certificate in Reference Studies in December of 2015, while working as a Library Assistant for the Hialeah Public Libraries. I was lucky, then, to take on a Librarian I, Technical Services Supervisor, position that became available.

During my time as a Librarian I, I worked in different aspects of the Library such as collection development, programming, social media, and donations. I organized and led our TeenSpace Program and Pagemasters Club. An opportunity became available and I was promoted to Librarian II, Systems Librarian. When I stepped into the position, I did so knowing that my Director, Grisel Torralbas, always had an open door if I ever had any questions.

As of October, I have learned many new skills I never thought I could do. I now know how to change power supplies in computers and was able to learn alongside my Director about the E-rate program. I was able to update all the computers at John F. Kennedy Memorial Library, configuring them and installing up-to-date software with help from my colleagues. I have many hats to wear on a daily basis but it's what keeps me on my toes and makes this job exciting and interesting.

Share a library program or service that you are excited about:
I have really enjoyed the Career Online High School (COHS) Program provided by some public libraries in the State of Florida. This is a program geared towards people who have not completed their high school diploma, ages 19 and over. It is a free, self-paced program where participants are able to complete and earn an 18-credit High School Diploma. At Hialeah Public Libraries, we were able to get 8 participants in the program and we are hoping to have our first graduation in December of 2017. It's exciting to see these people work towards their goal and helping them achieve it.

What do you most like about working in libraries?
What I love most about working in a Library is that every day is different. I also have many different roles, depending on what is needed for the different situations that arise on a daily basis. I also like to provide help to patrons with book suggestions, computer help, or anything else they may need.
